Teaching is a key part of a my practice

I want to help us create a kinder industry

One that acknowledges the complexities of contemporary arts practices

And is accessible and sustainable

The classes that I offer reflect these goals and values

"when we talk about the structure of a play, we are thinking in terms of how this thing works, what is powering it, what is keeping it chugging along. Not just the plot"

Upcoming courses and workshops

In person course, Adelaide, March 6th

BEGIN AS WE MEAN TO GO ON: A PLAYFUL WORKSHOP ON THE WAYS IN WHICH WE CAN USE THE FIRST REHEARSAL TO CREATE A SAFE, HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

A production is a workplace and that first day of rehearsal is the creation of a new team, coming from a variety of backgrounds and experience levels. I have always been deeply interested in this day and the ways in which we can use it generate shared values, language, methodology and to make collaborators, many of whom are temporary employees within companies, feel safe and welcomed.

Who: This course is for directors, stage managers, company managers, playwrights or anyone interested in theatre safety and finding ways to empower their collaborators. Please note that I consider playwrights to be artistic leaders too: you wrote the workplace so you have a part to play in making it a great one.

Structure: This is a two hour, in-person workshop. A lot of it will operate as if it is a first day of rehearsal with plenty of room for discussion on why I use the methods I use and how you might keep building on these ideas and adapting them for your own use.

Where: Slingsby, The Hall of Possibilities.

When: Saturday March 6th, 2-4pm

Prices: $30.

Online course, March - April 2021

a practice for 2021 and beyond: balancing artist practice, work, life and health to create a sustainable career

I want you to have a career that you can sustain. This means finding a way to do it without feeling that your responsibilities are competing for your time, valuing the many different elements of your practice and life and celebrating the ways in which they feed each other. The course draws on theory of care, the slow living movement, eco-feminism and my own research and interviews into joyful and sustainable careers.

Who: This course is for those trying to find balance in their work and life. It is particularly suited to those who manage multiple jobs and responsibilities. I have a particular interest and experience in working with regional artists, artists who are at moments of career change and those working with chronic illness, disability, or ADHD.

Structure: This course runs over two sessions, each two hours long and involves small groups of 3-5 participants. Groups will be put together based on similar circumstances or questions individuals are considering. I facilitate these sessions in a very collaborative and discussion-based manner. There are specific exercises and tasks before and during the workshops. If you would prefer to do this work one-on-one, contact me.

Where: Online

When: March-April 2021, times and dates based on student availability

Prices are set on a sliding scale: $125 or $75, depending on how able much you are to pay or $50 for those with a chronic illness or disability.
